Hospitality Careers: Roles, Job Titles and Descriptions

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to work in entry-level roles within a range of hospitality settings including: hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, casinos, theme parks and cruise lines. The roles that relate to a Certificate II in Hospitality course are, but are not limited to:

Many of these jobs are customer-facing roles with the responsibility of delivering excellent customer service and facilitating leisure for customers. However, there are also a variety of behind-the-scenes jobs including: sales, marketing, accounting and events, and many management level jobs across the industry, from venue managers to executive chefs.

  1. Bar Attendant

Job description: They typically work at bars, restaurants or other liquor-licensed establishments. A Bar Attendant will often have experience in beer pouring and making beverages, from mixed spirits to cocktails. They work across all facets of bar operations, including: taking orders, making drinks, communicating with customers, managing cleanliness and stock management. They must have a valid RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol). Whilst some bartenders complete training courses, a lot of experience is on-the-job.

 

Core skills: Memory, attention to detail, basic math, attentiveness, interpersonal, active listening, multi-tasking, rapport building and verbal communication.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Tap pour beer
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage making
  • Basic cocktail knowledge
  • Taking orders and using point-of-sale systems
  • General bar maintenance
  • Cleaning and hygiene maintenance
  • Delivery coordination
  • Customer service and interaction

 

 

  1. Gaming attendant

Job description: Gaming Attendants provide gaming services in casinos, clubs and pubs. This role has a strong customer service and interaction element, with the sole purpose to accommodate for patrons needs. Ensuring their gaming experience is comfortable is number one priority. Current RSA and RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gaming) card is essential.

 

Core skills: Customer service, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, friendliness.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Cash handling
  • Managing aggressive behaviour and settling disputes arising at gaming tables
  • Conducting Keno games and operating a TAB outlet
  • Managing gaming machines and systems
  • Reporting any missing or damaged equipment
  • Provide service to customers
  • Provide responsible service of alcohol
  • Analyse and report on gaming machines
  • Assist with food and beverage service

 

 

  1. Food and beverage attendant

Job description: Food and Beverage Attendants work across a variety of venues, including restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels. Excellent customer service is the hallmark of success in this role. They must have a valid RSA (Responsible service of alcohol).

 

Core skills: Responsible service of alcohol (RSA) certificate, customer service, multi-tasking, wine knowledge, food service, hygiene and cleanliness, cash handling, friendly and energetic nature, verbal communication, teamwork, confidence and teamwork.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:  

  • Providing responsible service of alcohol
  • Greeting customers in a confident and professional way
  • Taking orders
  • Operating point-of-sale system and EFTPOS machines
  • Understanding all food and beverage items on the menu and being able to provide personalised recommendations
  • May be responsible for opening and closing the venue
  • Cleaning and hygiene maintenance

 

 

  1. Café attendant/Barista

Job description: This role involves serving customers, taking orders, serving food and making coffees. Customer service and friendliness is a huge focus of the role.

 

Core skills: Coffee brewing, customer service, food preparation, food handling, cooking, cash handling, front of house, team work, resilience, interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication, active listening, attention to detail and accuracy.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Taking orders and cash handling
  • Preparing and serving food and drinks
  • Operating a point-of-sale termina and EFTPOS machine
  • Cash handling and banking
  • Waiting tables and serving customers
  • Cleaning coffee grinders, wiping down tables and work spaces
  • Coffee making
  • Cleaning and maintain service area to food safety standards

 

 

  1. Catering assistant

Job description: The role of a catering assistant is to support the caterers and chefs to prepare food for customers and keep the kitchen operating smoothly. Catering Assistants may be required to work outside of standard business hours, including on weekends or during the evening.

 

Core skills: Food preparation, collaboration, HACCP, kitchen operations, aged care, hygiene and cleaning, emotional intelligence, customer service, food handling, knife skills, customer service and friendliness.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist chef and chef manager with food/drink preparation
  • Carrying out basic food preparation, such as washing, peeling and dicing
  • Cutting up meat, fish, vegetables and bread
  • Receiving deliveries from suppliers
  • Function set up and clear down
  • Taking orders
  • Cleaning and washing dishes
  • Food/coffee and tea service
  • Managing and organising the store room and fridge

 

 

  1. Waiter/Waitress/Food Runner

Job description: The role of waiters and waitresses is to interact with customers, take orders and service food and beverages. They can work across multiple venues within the Hospitality Industry, including restaurants, bars, hotels, casinos and other food-serving establishments.

 

Core skills: Interpersonal and communication, detail-orientated, serving food and beverages, taking orders, customer service, neat professional presentation, confidence, friendliness, wine knowledge, menu knowledge and responsible service of alcohol.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Greeting customers in a confident way
  • Communicate venue menu and provide personalised recommendations
  • Taking orders and waiting tables
  • Operating point-of-sale system and EFTPOS machines
  • Providing responsible service of alcohol
  • Cleaning and hygiene maintenance

 

 

  1. Porter

Job description: The role of a Porter is to handle baggage for guests. They may bring luggage up to guests’ rooms or take baggage down to the lobby. Porters can be found in hotels and motels, on ships and in transport terminals, such as wharves, airports and train stations. 

 

Core skills: Interpersonal, written and verbal communication, friendliness, detail-orientated, customer service, neat professional presentation and confidence.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Look after guest’s luggage by loading and unloading luggage
  • Tagging baggage and providing identification claim vouchers to guests
  • Showing guests to their rooms, cabins or berths 
  • Provide concierge services when necessary
  • Explaining the features and facilities of rooms and services
  • Organising transport for guests, including taxis and rental cars
  • Giving directions and answering questions about the location and amenities
  • Keeping the Porter environment tidy and organised

 

 

  1. Room attendant

Job description: Room attendants are responsible for maintaining a standard of cleanliness throughout a hotel or other hospitality venue. Their role is to ensure guests have enjoy their stay and are satisfied with the level of service provided.

 

Core skills: Professional housekeeping, thoroughness, positive attitude, time management, hygiene and cleanliness, customer service, quality standards, autonomy and teamwork.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Explaining the features and facilities of rooms and services
  • Greeting customers in a confident and professional way
  • Make beds, do laundry, clean bathrooms and stock linens
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene throughout the venue

 

 

  1. Host/Hostess

Job description: The role of a host or hostess within the Hospitality Industry is to welcome guests and answer any queries they have. A high school diplomas or equivalent is preferred for this roe. The ability to provide top-notch service, have a positive attitude and ability to work well under pressure is important.

 

Core skills: Customer service, verbal communicating, active listening, attention to detail, hospitality management, responsible service of alcohol (RSA), team leadership, friendliness, delegation, POS software, booking management and thoroughness.

 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Greet customers as they enter venue if friendly and professional way
  • Take reservations and direct guests to their tables
  • Provide guests with menus and answer any queries they have
  • Handle phone calls and customer queries about the venue or menu
  • Assist various venue staff when necessary
  • Engage with guests to ensure they’re happy with the service, food and beverages
  • Providing great customer service
