Workplace Bullying is a Health and Safety Issue
Dr Caponecchia, academic expert in psychological hazards at work says, “Workplace bullying is a health and safety issue, and needs to be recognised as such.
Occupational health and safety is not just about protecting workers from disease, but ensuring their well-being at work. Doing so is in the best interest of the employer.”
Claims for compensation over stress account for 7 per cent of the total number of compensation claims but 27 per cent of the total cost. He points out effects of bullying for the victims and employers:
- Cannot perform at their best
- Absenteeism increases
- Staff turnover goes up
- Satisfaction and commitment go down
- Victims suffer anxiety, fear, depression and it can lead to suicide
- Greater costs for organisations through the workers' compensation process
- Increased workers compensation premiums
- Damage to the organisation’s reputation
