Workplace Bullying is a Health and Safety Issue

Dr Caponecchia, academic expert in psychological hazards at work says, “Workplace bullying is a health and safety issue, and needs to be recognised as such.

Occupational health and safety is not just about protecting workers from disease, but ensuring their well-being at work. Doing so is in the best interest of the employer.”

Claims for compensation over stress account for 7 per cent of the total number of compensation claims but 27 per cent of the total cost. He points out effects of bullying for the victims and employers:

  • Cannot perform at their best
  • Absenteeism increases
  • Staff turnover goes up
  • Satisfaction and commitment go down
  • Victims suffer anxiety, fear, depression and it can lead to suicide
  • Greater costs for organisations through the workers' compensation process
  • Increased workers compensation premiums
  • Damage to the organisation’s reputation

Food Safety Supervisor Training Deadline:Oct 1, 2011

The FSS must be trained by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by the NSW Food Authority.
